about
It was another sweltering hot day in Meanjin. I’d never worn shorts on stage before, and haven’t since. A 12 and a half minute garage-punk set at 2pm on a Sunday in a legendary, now unfortunately closed, guitar shop. The first, and only, public outing of The Corrections. Before our set I walked a block around the corner for a slab of Red Stripe and a bottle of whiskey, carried it back on my shoulder, got through 4 tins while nervously chatting in the crowd, and half the bottle of whiskey between us on stage.
The room was full and sweaty. I remember seeing Matty smiling with his jeans rolled up above his boots. Gianni used a vintage Fender Twin as a stage monitor. Carter wore a jumpsuit, like Mike Watt, and played bass in the crowd. I shouted until I ran out of breath and tripped over my words. The show was over by 3. We sold a few tapes and prints then retreated to the air-conditioned bars of the valley. I don’t remember getting home that evening.
This live recording captures some of that energy. It’s raw, it’s scrappy, it sounds like it could fall apart at any point. It’s full of potential, that the pandemic put a stop to. This is what The Corrections really sounded like, and it was pretty fucking good.
